I'm James, a retired physician - I had an exciting career in medicine and did not want to retire. I suspect this is because I did not know how not to work, and I've never been good at R&R. I lived to work, and when I no longer had a job, I was very frustrated. To put meaning into my life, I studied nutrition. I had been very interested in this topic in my last 5 years in the Steel industry - Ultimate Sapiens was to have been my company, the vehicle to deliver nutrition and lifestyle advice. By the time I gained sufficient knowledge to start my new career counselling, Covid was on us! I volunteered to help, but having never worked in the NHS, my career before retirement had been in the Army, Oil & Gas Exploration and Steel; for reasons better known to the Scottish NHS, I was not considered suitable. This rejection did my mood no good but pushed me to enjoy my fabulous surroundings, especially the Cairngorms. I'd always enjoyed hill walking and mountaineering: first as a teenager in the Scouts, secondly as a soldier and finally as a leisure activity. Now I had more leisure time than I knew what to do with, so Ultimate Sapiens became an excellent name for this site, sharing my hillwalking news and a smattering of exercise and nutrition science, which hopefully you will find interesting.
